Journaling Prompts, Week of November 8

Day 1:

  • Read Joshua 24:1-3a, 14-25
  • Picture yourself in the crowd of people listening and responding to Joshua’s speech and exhortation. Reflect or journal about what you are feeling as you read this passage from that particular point of view.

Day 2:

  • Read Joshua 24:1-3
  • Reflect on the people who were most influential in your decision to follow Jesus Christ. How did their journeys of faith pave the way for yours?

Day 3:

  • Read Joshua 24:14-15
  • We were created for worship, so if we are not worshiping God then we are still worshiping something or someone else. How have you encountered this truth in your life?

For the last two prompts, reflect on this prayer based on the reading from the book of Joshua

You let us choose, O God,
between you and the false gods of this world.
In the midst of the night of sin and death,
wake us from our slumber
and call us forth to greet Christ,
so that with eyes and hearts fixed on him,
we may follow to eternal light. Amen.

(from Revised Common Lectionary)

Day 4:

  • Pray the above prayer. We can either seek out those things in life that will serve us, or we can seek to serve God with our whole life. What difference have you seen in your own experience between those two paths?

Day 5:

  • Pray the above prayer. What kind of slumber might God need to wake you up from? How can you greet Christ in your, “your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life*” today?
